Presentations

Throughout monday and tuesday I saw a range of great and decent powerpoints. It was clear that some people knew more about their subjects than others. Jim had a pretty detailed and nice powerpoint in my opinion. I think he pieced his presentation together very well and had great knowledge about the subject matter. It was interesting to see how people presented their choice of their 1st or second paper. I thought Erins was also interesting because her presentation wasnt on the average DC Comic Hero, or action packed hero but a different type of hero.
Overall I had a great time listening to the presentations and seeing how people crafted their powerpoints.

Pr0ject

What are you doing for your presentation? How will you prepare?

I will b discussing my most recent paper on Batman and the role of his mentor Alfred. I didn’t want to pick my first paper because it is very poorly crafted and structured. I also feel like I can have more substantial information in this power point since I know allot more about it than what I wrote my first paper on, Hercules. I also love the Batman movies, which make me want to go deeper into the Hero's life. I am going to prepare first by finishing up my paper and fixing all my errors. I need to summarize the role of Alfred first to be able to start my PowerPoint. I also need to work on my thesis in this paper because as far as I can remember it wasn’t very good. I then will craft a nice PowerPoint with the requirements that I need to meet on Batman. I’m pretty creative so I don’t think that meeting those requirements will be a problem, I just think that some of the explanation requirements might be weak. I also think that picking my second paper was a better idea than my first. The first paper on the archytepal Hero steps was pretty bland and boring for me.

Blog – On p. 107, Blabbermouth gives Haroun a piece of feminist advice. She basically says that girls aren’t able to be strong (or heroic) characters because of the ways people stereotype them. Think about contemporary female heroes. Do we have any? Do we value the fact that they are female?

In the Hero story the male character seems more dominant and prevalent. There are some female heroes though, Electra being one. Electra is like a ninja type woman who fights crime. One of my favorite female heroes is Kill Bill. Uma Thurman does a great job in Tarantinos film. The men basically have the lead roles usually and the women tend to have a smaller position or will be an aid to the men.
There is also everyday women heroes like firewomen, and policewomen. At this rank women are treated the same, but I think in other job positions they aren’t. Some women cant receive a position in the company because their manager doesn’t think that they have the capability to do it.

Batman

Analyze Batman in terms of the three different types of heroes we have discussed (archetypal, tragic and anti-hero). Which type of hero is he? Is it possible that he is multiple types?
Batman is mostly tragic hero because he is self sacrificial for the innocent people of Gotham City. He protects them from the evil villains and helps reduce crime on the streets. Batman could also be classified as a mixture of all the hero types because he shares a little bit of each trait. Batman dedicates everything for the people and taking down villains with his cunning ways. He always wins his fights and even though there is suspense sometimes where it seems like he isnt going to make it, he eventually wins and defeats. Also Batman wants to bring down crime as does Harvey Dent, but Harvey does it without hurting any other innocent people while Batman on the contrary always causes more destruction to Gotham. One of is flaws is also Harvey Dent and the relationship he has with Rachel. Bruce Wayne loves Rachel and when she gets killed by one of the Jokers men he feels responsible and upset that the people of Gotham City want to bring him down and have him turn himself in.

• Blog – Comment on the underground man’s actions. How is acting here in relationship to the claims he made in Part 1?

In the first part the underground man had an active mind, and was always spiting himself. He sits in his St.Petersburg house with his smelly housekeeper and thinks to himself. The underground man explained that he doesn’t like the truth, and that freewill is very important. Without freewill then you only see one viewpoint of something. In the second part the underground man still has his active mind and still seems uncertain about choices. We also see that the underground man is changing and becoming more active with people around him. In the second part he goes to the bar with some people he knows. The underground man knows that he isn’t accepted by them but still wants to prove that he can be there with them. The people treat him as he isn’t wanted and make him feel lonely. Also I realize that the underground man changes his beliefs to go against what people believe, not what the system believes. The underground man doesn’t want people to shape who he is, which is why he is against what people think of him. Also we see that underground man has evolved a bit too because he finally goes out into society and is doing new things prove people that they are wrong about him.

Blog – Who is Rooster? What are your first impressions of him?

Rooster is one of the tough federal marshals. Maddie Ross wants to meet him because she wants to get help from him to find the killer of her father who is somewhere in the Indian Territory. He is well known for hunting down wanted criminals for the government to put them in jail and away from crime. Rooster seems to be a crazy man; he’s killed twenty-three people and captured many to bring them in. When we first see him in the movie Maddie is trying to get his attention after he unloads a wagon full o’ dem prisoners that’s he’s gathered from the Indian Territory. He has an eye patch and doesn’t look too intimidating. The first action we see him do is kick one of dem prisoners in the back as he is walking slow inside the jailhouse. We learn that Rooster Cogburn is a very dangerous man even though he doesn’t seem too intimidating. He gets the job done but apparently doesn’t do it clean. It is unclear how he takes care of some of his business but he seems to have been very successful at it because he has been sworn in to telling the truth in court since he’s done it so many times. I think that Rooster will help Maddie out but am not sure that he will actually find the killer since were reading about the ANTI hero, therefore he will not do something for the greater good.

FyoDOR DOStoYEVSKY

Who is the ‘underground man’? What are your first impressions of him?

The underground man is sure as hell a weird character. He lives in St. Petersburg, Russia by himself. He doesn’t care much about things and doesn’t like people. He explains how he perceives things and how he even dislikes himself, he says, I am a sick man… I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man.”(3) The underground man sure like to complain a lot as well and say negative things towards himself. He also always seems to “spite” himself. As I was reading this the way its written is very strange but also has a nice flow putting you in the Russians perspective. The underground man also somewhat plays the devils advocate and goes against everything. He isn’t social and is basically like a hermit, he seems to be going through depression also, which could explain his negativity. Although the underground man is very weird and strange he is also very smart and once used to be in the government service. Even though he is smarter than all the people around him, he doesn’t realize that and just lets tears himself down. He just sits there in his corner and hates on the world and is the “negative Nancy” about everything. I think that this character will be interesting to read about because all of his different and special characteristics.

Othello END

I feel that the characters have suffered and endured great pain and endurance throughout the play. I feel the most sorry for the people that had to encounter Iago’s wit. This heroic story didn’t end happily since is a tragedy. Iago manipulated other people’s minds and basically used them as his puppets because he didn’t want to get his hands dirty. Iago had people play for him because they trusted him they listened to him and his words. He also ended the relationship between Othello and Desdemona, and even caused Othello to kill Desdemona for “cheating” on him. He pushed and caused Othello to kill Desdemona, who hasn’t done anything negative to Iago. Iago is just plainly upset that Cassio was promoted and that he wasn’t on his level. I think that Othello shouldn’t of replaced Iago in Cassio’s place because this now made it easier for Iago to mess with him.
I think that this jealousy throughout the play shows that it can be a very powerful weapon. Cassio is also a tragic character because he was a lieutenant and then lost his rank after he becomes drunk and looses nobility from Othello in Cyprus. I feel bad for Othello because he shouldn’t have trusted a man who was completely jealous and killed his love just because his mind was manipulated. Jealousy has helped me process that one shouldn’t let it takeover and control your actions. Othello became jealous that Desdemona was having an affair with Cassio and it upset him to imagine that. I pity Desdemona because she was bait in Iago’s mind and witty plans. She didn’t deserve to die because she loved Othello and was just setup. I think Othello’s emotions caused him to go over the edge and kill Desdemona because he was confused about what was going on and his love with her. I can’t imagine something that’s the same in my life, but similar situations could occur in which there is something else intended, or where they use reverse psychology.

Oh thell-O

Explain Iago’s plan as it stands at the end of Act I. After reading the beginning of Act II, do you believe he will be successful? What is leading you to your conclusion?

At the end of Act I starting from line 376 Iago has a soliloquy explaining his plans to ruin Othello and basically how he will take Rodrigo’s money and use his wit to out smart the other characters. Before his soliloquy he talks with Rodrigo to stop him from drowning him self and committing suicide, and makes it seem that they have a good relationship but really he is just fooling him and using him for his money. His other plan is to make Otello believe that Desdemona is sleeping with Casio. I think that he will be successful because he can manipulate minds and trick people. Even though Iago looks like the one who gets along with all the other people and seems the most innocent, he is the one in this situation that is stirring up the heat and most deceitful. He gains their respect and trust that could give him an easy opportunity to danger anything. Othello wants to ruin his relationship with Desdemona because if they break up then him and Rodrigo will have a better alliance making it easier for him to become lieutenant. Also if Iago blames Cassio then that would make Othello appoint Iago as the new lieutenant. Iago sets up the characters perfectly so that he can manipulate them accordingly to his plans. I think that he will succeed because he has all the right aspects for his plan. This story is also a tragedy and that’s indicating that something will go wrong.

Luke Vs Beowulf

– Compare Luke Skywalker to Beowulf. What makes them different? Do they share any traits in common? How are they both heroic?

The heroic characters Luke Skywalker and Beowulf have many similarities and differences. They both fight greater forces that are more powerful then they are. Luke fights against Darth Vader but he doesn’t have the strong desire of fighting like Beowulf does. Beowulf on the other hand wants to fight and defeat, he fights Grande, Grenades mother, and the dragon. Beowulf has a strong reputation for being a great fighter and defeating monsters, this helps him build on his reputation at Heart when he’s gaining hope from the people. Luke on the other hand doesn’t have a reputation other than his dad. Beowulf’s determination helps him kill because unlike Luke he knows and understands his strength. Luke at first doesn’t know how to use the “force” he has but eventually learns. This can also relate to how Beowulf wanted to come fight Grendel without any hesitation, on the other hand Luke didn’t want to go help save Leia at first. Both characters also have mystical weapons, and are naturally skilled. Luke has the Light saber, and Beowulf has a large powerful sword that he receives from Unferth. Luke’s strength is different because it’s mental and skillful, while Beowulf has power and determination. Another difference also is that Luke Skywalker has a spiritual guide Obi-Wan, and Beowulf doesn’t have one. Both Luke and Beowulf answer a call to adventure to fight against the evil. Luke fights because he wants revenge for the murder of his aunt and uncle, and to save princess Leila. Beowulf fought for the pride of his country and heritage, treasure, and honor. Their compassions cause them to set a goal and do something for the good of others.

BEOWULF 2

• Blog – Comment on Wiglaf’s character throughout the end of the book. Is he honorable or heroic like Beowulf or does he display an additional set of values?

In the end of the book Wiglaf shows his bravery by being the only one to help out and go with Beowulf to kill the dragon that has been attacking Geat-Land. His loyalty, strength, courage, and the willing to risk his own life for others give him characteristic traits of a hero, and reflect Beowulf’s appearance in the beginning of the book. Beowulf knows that his death is reaching when he is about to fight the dragon. Beowulf doesn’t back down and have Wiglaf take a shot at the dragon; instead he takes the stand and approaches the dragon. Wiglaf gives moral support while Beowulf is trying to take on the dragon. When Beowulf stabs the dragon for the 2nd time the sword breaks and Wiglaf steps up and stabs the dragons throat to prevent it from breathing fire. Once the dragon’s venom starts killing Beowulf, Wiglaf looks after him and listens to his last words. Beowulf has Wiglaf retrieve the treasure from the dragon and tells him to watch after the people of his kingdom. Beowulf’s last request is also to construct a barrow in remembrance of him. Wiglaf represents the new heroic figure of the hopes of people and the kingdoms future. Since he has similar characteristics to Beowulfs heroic values Wiglaf becomes the new figure of the Geats.

BEOWULF 1

At the opening of this excerpt, Unferth tries to tarnish Beowulf’s reputation by discussing his swimming match with Breca. Why would Unferth do this? How does Beowulf respond? How does his response contribute to his persona as a hero?

When Beowulf sails over to the Danes he meets Hrothgar who accepts Beowulf’s offer to defeat Grendel. Hrothgar invites him to mead-hall for a night of celebration. They eat, drink and are amazed by Beowulf. Unferth doesn’t want to look bad in front of his own people so he tries to make Beowulf look bad by telling his people about how he lost a swimming match to Breca. Beowulf explains that while he was swimming he was pulled down by a sea monster and had to fight him and kill him. He explains that because he killed the monster the sea was safer for all the sailors. After he says that Unferth or anyone else couldn’t try to kill the sea monster, and if he tried he wouldn’t make it to the finish. His actions contribute to his persona because they show that he is strong, brave, and pertinacious. Beowulf redeems his reputation and shows his dominant personality by restoring the atmosphere in the room and bringing back the peoples confidence in him. People look up to him because he shows that he has the strength and courage to take action and not back down for anything. People hope that he will save them from Grendel.

What does Joe want and why is it against regulations?

Joe wants to get out of the hospital. He has been trying to communicate with Morse code to the nurses but they couldn’t translate it. They eventually found someone that could help to understand what he was saying. All really wants is to be normal and go out into the world again. He wants all his limbs back, and wants to show people what war did to him. When he asks to go they let him down and say that he isn’t allowed. If the hospital let him out people would see the horrific things that war does to people, and this could potentially scare them. This would restrict other people from wanting to join the military and go to war.

Explain the dream with Christ.

Joe starts tripping and hallucinating off the medicine he receives. In his dream he encounters Christ. He meets Christ at a train station playing black jack with men who are about to go to the war. He realizes that the fate of the Tucson boy is different then the other men and that they will die and he wont. He then jumps out of the train window to catch up with Jesus who is hovering in the distance in the desert. Joe is scared to have to encounter something that is horrible, and worse than death which is suffering.

• Why does Joe decide to master time? How does he do it?

Since Joe cant see, hear, speak, touch, he doesn’t know how to tell dates or time. This makes him have a disconnection with what’s outside in the real world. He tries different ways to counting time but gets lost he would have to stay up all day and count. He finally decided to tell time by the heat of sun hitting his neck during the day. His method of telling time wasn’t exactly precise but it helped him somewhat with a connection with the outside world.

What does Joe believe is worth fighting for? What is not worth it?

He believes that there should be something worth fighting for if people are going to risk their lives and fight. Joe doesn’t see what he is fighting for. He believes that if someone dies in war they will not see actually what they are fighting for. Joe believes that he is fighting to protect himself, and so he can go home back to his loved ones.

Why does the rat come to visit Joe? What does it represent?

The rat comes to visit him to eat off his flesh. When Joe is awake he thinks he feels his open wound being munched at by this rat. He remembers when he saw a dead German officer being munched on by a rat. The “presence” of the rat scares him because wherever rats are there is death nearby. This rat isn’t actually there because he is just hallucinating it. Since he cant see and doesn’t have arms so he cant pinch himself to see if he is dreaming or hallucinating.

Why does Joe remember working at the bakery? What does he admire about Jose?

Joe remembers working at the bakery with Jose, and how he let down this nice New Yorker girl that wanted to marry him. Jose was also a bum who got himself a job. He later finds a job that pays more, but doesn’t want to leave the bakery because he was given an opportunity there. Jose finally knocks over a bunch of blueberry pies and his manager fires him. One thing that Joe admires about Jose is that he paid for the pies that he ruined, which was surprising because he used to he a bum and you’d regularly expect them to be greedy about money.

What is Joe’s situation? Why does he compare it to drowning?

Joe has come back from a war and is severely injured because of an explosion. The doctors have to amputate his arm, which is a horrible experience to loose a limb. I believe that his mindset and what he was dealing with at that time made him visualize and think back into memories of himself before the war. I think he compares it to drowning because he keeps going back and forth through memories of his life and before the war and after it.

Why does Esther feel such a need to sleep with Irwin?  Does she feel better or different after it has happened?

Esther feels the need to sleep with Irwin because throughout this whole book she has been feening for sex. She wants to have “sexperience” because she has been through situations where sex was involved before and she couldn’t or didn’t want to do it then. Irwin was also a decent man who was well educated. Apparently he was equipped also because Esther was complaining that it hurt a lot, and after she couldn’t stop bleeding because of a hemorrhage. She feels somewhat better that she finally had sex, but has to go to the hospital again right after because of the bleeding.

BJ9

What does Esther mean when she says she feels trapped under a bell jar?

Esther feels confused, and is depressed because of her mental conditions. She seems to be the delicate object enclosed in the bell jar. She is under the control and pressure of people at the hospital, which could represent the bell jar. Doctors and nurses didn’t treat her well at Gordons hospital, and should couldn’t do anything about their control over her and her treatments. Esthers condition makes her feel like she is failing at something because she doesn’t feel right with what has previously happened in her life.

Describe the new asylum Esther goes to? What might life have been like had she been forced to stay where she was?

Esthers new asylum is Caplan, which is much nicer than the one she just transferred from. One thing that is substantially different is her doctor is Nolan, who’s a woman. I think this is nice because Esther absolutely hated Doctor Gordon, and Dr. Nolan is more flexible with her privileges. I think Esther would have ended up in a worse condition at the older hospital because they didn’t treat her respectfully at all. In the end I think that this is definitely better for her.

What is wrong with Esther? Why does she try to kill herself?

Esther is so shocked by what happened with Marco on her last night out in New York. He tries to rape her, and she ends up having an unfortunate evening. This makes her want to attempt suicide again, by trying to OD on sleeping pills. When she comes home the next day she finds out that she wasn’t accepted into the Honors Writing course at Cambridge. All of these events put her through so much stress that she doesn’t want to go through the obstacles of life to face her problems.

TBJ 6

Why doesn’t Esther like Dr. Gordon? Is he hurting or helping her?

Esther doesn’t like Dr. Gordon conceited, and didn’t seem like he was concerned to help her out. When she came into his office he saw a picture of his family. The picture was turned to he could show off his family to people. This made her jealous and mad that she didn’t have the perfect family that he did. HE also didn’t really seem to care about her condition, and was just in it for the money. This put a conceited perspective on him through Esthers eyes. Also I think that the shock treatment was a bad thing to do because it made her crazier.

How does Esther act when she returns to Boston? How might her night with Marco have influenced her actions?

In her last night in New York she goes out with Marco, who is basically in it for sex. We see this when he tries to rape her. When she returns back to Boston the next morning she acts very strange, and doesn’t leave the house. She tries to occupy her self by doing different things throughout the house so she doesn’t have to think about Marco. When Esther threw her clothes out the window she was trying to get rid of what was left of him.

What does Esther want from Constantin? How does he react? What do you think of his reaction?

Esther meets Constantin through Mrs. Willard. Since Buddy had sex many times, Esther wanted to find a good relationship. After dinner they went back to Constantins apartment and Esther tried to get a little comfortable to seduce Constantin. It was strange because he didn’t make a move and kept the first date down to a minimum. I think he did a good thing because it shows a woman that your not in a relationship for sex.

TBJ 3

What does Esther think of Buddy? What does she want from him? What does she want him to think of her?

Buddy made an impression that he was straightedge, and not experienced. He wanted to look like he hadn’t been around with women, but we later find out that he slept with this woman numerous times over the summer. This made Esther think of him differently because he put on a different personality for her at first. When Esther finds out Buddy has tuberculosis, she uses this against her friends and tells them that they’re together but he is sick. Esther does this so they will leave her alone so she doesn’t have to go out at night.

TBJ 2

How does Esther avoid Chemistry in college? Why might she find science so overwhelming?

She avoids Chemistry by asking the dean if she could sit in the chemistry class and listen but not actually take the tests and do the work. The dean accepts because he thinks that her taking chemistry to learn the skills is a good idea. She liked this because it looked as if she was taking notes and being productive about chemistry but actually she was writing poems for her Shakespeare class. Science could be overwhelming because it is really complex. Esther isn’t that type of woman she likes simpler things. This could also be another reason why she feels lost in New York, because there is so much going on in “the big Apple”.

• Explain the first line of the novel. What does it show about Esther and her experience in New York.

Judging by the first line in the novel, it seems that Esther doesn’t know what she is doing in New York, the Rosenbergs were electrocuted, and she’s in a “queer sultry summer”. So far her experience in New York hasn’t been pleasant, she seems to feel out of place. She also talks about the Rosenbergs and how she keeps seeing their faces, which also tells us about the era Esther is living in. This is the time of the cold war, and high tensions for communism. The weather was also incredibly hot in the city, which frustrated her.

Comment on a decision made by a character that reflects or revokes a value from the 1950s.

Miss Watson decided to reject Paul’s offer to not marry him. This is a strange thing because during this era it was in the norm to have a husband and live a happy “nuclear family” life. Miss Watson doesn’t believe that women should just go to college and get married and become a housewife all her life, she believes that women should look outside the box and find an occupation. She does this to one of her students Joan. She realizes that Joan has the potential and desire to become a lawyer and attend law school at Yale, so she helps her out with her application and acceptance. This is also another strange thing because Miss Watson is going against the word of Wellesley, and is trying to change things for the future of women.

MLS 1

Comment on how the film is portraying the time period of the 1950s.

The film is portraying the 1950’s in a very well manner in my opinion. It shows that women in college want to get married and start a “nuclear family”. The role of women in this time was basically to cook, take care of the kids and husband, and clean. The women at Wellesley are strictly taught to follow these rules, or they will be seen differently. Another thing the film shows is that men are favored over women. This is exemplified by Dunbar who has sex with the students, even though the faculty is aware of it. When the nurse tries to help the women from getting pregnant she is fired from Wellesley, but Dunbar isn’t for having sex with them.

Stella is remarkably sad at the end of the play because of what happens to Blanch. Was she right in doing what she has done?

At the end of the play Stella and Stanley send Blanche off to a mental institution. Throughout the play she has drove both of them crazy and they thought that it would do her some good. In the play we realized she is a pedophile, alcoholic, and is somewhat psycho. She lied to men to seduce them, and caused tension between Stanley and Stella. She also hid her problems, which eventually built up all the stress she had. I think what she did was right because something had to be done about her problems.

SND 3

What is revealed about Blanche in these chapters? Do these revelations come as a shock?

We learn the truth behind Blanche in this act. WE learn that she was involved with some business at The Hotel Flamingo. She was also kicked out of there for sleeping with multiple men! We also learn that she was getting with a 17-year-old boy at her school. This is the reason why she is here with Stella and Stanley because her superintendent asked her to leave for a while. She seems to me like a prostitute/pedophile.

SND 2

Why does Blanche disapprove of Stanley?

Blanche seems to disapprove of him for numerous reasons. First off he is a Polack and doesn’t come from a wealthy family. Blanche on the contrary has had a wealthy background. When they meet there seems to be some tension/affections between the two. Another reason is the he is abusive, when he playing poker with his friends he hits her. Blanche seems somewhat threatened by him, and also tells Stella that she deserves better.

SND

Explain something a character does in Scene 2-3 that teaches us something new about them, something we didn’t know in Scene 1?

Scenes 2 and 3 show a different side of Stanley. He is seen as a macho Polack, that gets around with all the women. We see this when he comes home from bowling and takes off his shirt, he seems to flirt with Blanche, Stellas sister. Stanley also seems to have a problem with his anger. He is mad when Blanches crate of nice clothes comes in, he sees that they are worth a lot and wonders if they are from the money from the house lost in Belle Reeve. In scene 3 he plays poker with his friends and throws a fit because Stella turns on the radio. He gets up and slaps her and also throws the radio. Later on that night he also yells back for Stella, which shows that he can be caring and forgiving.

Essay Ideas

For my essay I am going to talk about the contrasting lives of both Norma Desmond and Willy Loman. I’m going to explain their individual stories and what they became to be. Both characters had the motivation and help from people around from them but eventually lost control in the end. In the middle I'm going to compare Langston’s poem to the individuals. The poem can relate to them because in the end the load and stress is so heavy that they explode. Towards the end I'm going to talk about their dreams and how they could of taken a different approach of how to pursue something they wanted without a bad ending.

Willy Vs Norma

Compare the characters of Willy Loman and Norma Desmond.

I think that both of these characters are mostly similar. They both are full of themselves and believe that everybody likes them. Norma believes that its all me me me, and nobody else. Willy believes that he is very successful and is at the level of social status with people around him. Both of these characters have also failed at their current occupations. Norma was very famous when movies didn’t have words, but when they changed to the newer style she wasn’t wanted because her acting skills weren’t substantial. Willy was also somewhat more successful that what he was, and when he started to get old he lost his natural talents. The differences between Norma and Willy are also that Norma has money, and Willy didn’t.

Were Willy’s final actions noble, or were they a sign of weakness?
I think that committing suicide is really ignorant because it hurts all the people around you. Willy decided that killing himself would help his family’s economic situation and could help Biff become somewhat successful (maybe). Willy presumed that the money Biff would receive would help Biff respect him a little bit more. Giving up on his family in my perspective made Willy seem weak, he might of “freed” them but he caused them grief. I believe that this made Willy very very weak because he gave up on his family.

What happens to Biff and Willy’s relationship after Biff goes to the hotel?

Willy was about to go to talk to Biffs math teacher because he flunked the class and now has to go to summer school. When Biff was going up to the hotel room to talk about what was going on he walked in on them when she was in the shower. He tried to hide it say that she is just staying there temporarily, which Biff doesn’t believe at all. Willy also gives his wifes stockings to her, which Biff is upset about. This is one of the main reasons that Biff and Willy don’t have a strong bond with eachother because he has lost fate in his dad. This also catalyzes the fact that Biff is set up for failure because he doesn’t see any point in pursuing something in his future.

Do you think Willy made the right decision to refuse Charlie’s help?

Charlie offers Willy a newer job but he doesn’t accept the offer. This job could of helped them to be stable financially instead of Willy having to borrow money every week from Bill to even sustain his families needs. Willy also wants to keep his pride and doesn’t want to look low in society. If he did accept Charlies job he would probably be ticked that he owns his own company and he has to work for him. Willy has done this before by refusing Bens proposal to go to Alaska for another job offer there.

DOSM 4

Was Ben a positive or negative influence on Willy? What does Linda think?

I think Ben was both positive and negative, he was positive because he still helps him with his financial difficulties, but he is negative because he wants to take him from the life he lives in now. Willy looks up to Ben because he is wealthy, and has a good job. Ben offers Willy to go to Alaska so he can make some good money. Linda doesn’t like this because she wants him to stay in town so he can stay with them and the boys. Linda cares about Willy staying with them, but Willy is more focused on staying financially stable.

Do you think Biff and Happy’s plan will work?

Biff and Happy are trying to think of ways that they can earn a good income, and do something they both enjoy. Biff has a passion for sports and Happy has a desire to take up a manager position. They want to be successful and make a lot of money, so then they can relax and enjoy life. The only problem is that Happy and Biff wouldn’t like this type of job, Biff likes to be outdoors, and Happy doesn’t like working so hard. I believe that they wont have the motive to start such a company like this because of the lifestyles that they both have.

In the middle of act I when Will is at his house and is talking to the boys Charlie his neighbor comes over to see what all the noise was about. Will and Charlie sit down and play cards. Charlie is not as rich as Willy, and is the father of Bernard. Bernard is a nerdy kid who doesn’t seem like he is very wanted. Since Charlie doesn’t have money Will doesn’t treat him as he would with other people. The only person that we see treated better is Ben who is wealthier than all of them.

• What do you make of Biff and Happy? Are they reliable characters? Are they happy?

Biff and Happy are brothers who seem to have a nice attitude and sense of humor. Biff is 32 and Happy is 30. Biff doesn’t have a solid job and works on a farm. He is a dfirter and doesn’t have money. Happy on the contrary has a nice job and wants to become the merchandise manager. Happy is lonely, and traditional. Both of the men are built, and handsome. They are ladies men and have interesting stories about previous women which I look forward to reading more about. I don’t think they are really happy at this moment because their dad is having memory problems, and complain about their occupation. I also am not sure if they are reliable because Biff goes from one job to another and Happy sleeps with one girl to another.

Ch 9

• In Chapter 9, Janie talks about how the angels grew jealous of man and chopped up and covered him in mud. How does this parable relate to Janie’s own experience?

In chapter 9 the narrator says that there was one man and the angels became jealous and annoyed of god and cut him up into smaller pieces. The connection is that Janie was beautiful and free at one point, but ever since Jody she has been cut down and degrading her. Her freedom is the mud, which is what covers her from being free from her womanhood. After Jody died she could be somewhat free again and doesn’t have to worry about Jody pushing her around. She is now happy that somebody that she didn’t even love isn’t holding her back, and she can go on with life.

Ch 6

Why does Janie care about the mule so much?

Janie cares about Matt Bonners mule because she saw herself in the mule. The mule was very mistreated and worn out. One day when the mule gets lost people start to taunt it and mess around with it. When Janie sees this she can’t help but feel bad for it. Jody then buys the mule for 5 dollars. Janie wants to save the mule from cruelty because she sees similar mistreatment. The mule works in the field all day and has malnutrition, and Janie must work in the town store. I found it strange how the mule died though, with its hooves facing the air.

TEWWG 3&4

Nature imagery comes up a lot in the first few chapters. Explain what you make of the last paragraph in Ch. 4.

I believe the last paragraph is saying that the Sun is Janie’s new romance entering her life, and the night is representing the happiness that might fade away. The book says, "They sat on the boarding house porch and saw the sun plunge into the same crack in the earth from which the night emerged." One of the nature imagery parts could have been when the sun was going down as she was starting something with a new man Joe. I hope she loves Joe and it doesn’t turn into the last relationship she had where she didn’t even love the man.

Catastrophe

People can react to disasters in many different ways. Usually people dont know what to do in a situation like this because they are so devistated. In a catastrophe people will usually want to help out in the community and help others that had been struck. The other type of people will get out of the area, and find a way to survive by themselfs. In Katrina help was sent immediately after the hurricane moved out. Even though people had to wait for aid, they did. The same in San Francisco, people had to wait in lines for 8 hours, and it was all they had, and could do basically.
