Why does the rat come to visit Joe? What does it represent?

The rat comes to visit him to eat off his flesh. When Joe is awake he thinks he feels his open wound being munched at by this rat. He remembers when he saw a dead German officer being munched on by a rat. The “presence” of the rat scares him because wherever rats are there is death nearby. This rat isn’t actually there because he is just hallucinating it. Since he cant see and doesn’t have arms so he cant pinch himself to see if he is dreaming or hallucinating.
