• In Chapter 9, Janie talks about how the angels grew jealous of man and chopped up and covered him in mud. How does this parable relate to Janie’s own experience?
In chapter 9 the narrator says that there was one man and the angels became jealous and annoyed of god and cut him up into smaller pieces. The connection is that Janie was beautiful and free at one point, but ever since Jody she has been cut down and degrading her. Her freedom is the mud, which is what covers her from being free from her womanhood. After Jody died she could be somewhat free again and doesn’t have to worry about Jody pushing her around. She is now happy that somebody that she didn’t even love isn’t holding her back, and she can go on with life.
