What is Joe’s situation? Why does he compare it to drowning?
Joe has come back from a war and is severely injured because of an explosion. The doctors have to amputate his arm, which is a horrible experience to loose a limb. I believe that his mindset and what he was dealing with at that time made him visualize and think back into memories of himself before the war. I think he compares it to drowning because he keeps going back and forth through memories of his life and before the war and after it.
