– Compare Luke Skywalker to Beowulf. What makes them different? Do they share any traits in common? How are they both heroic?
The heroic characters Luke Skywalker and Beowulf have many similarities and differences. They both fight greater forces that are more powerful then they are. Luke fights against Darth Vader but he doesn’t have the strong desire of fighting like Beowulf does. Beowulf on the other hand wants to fight and defeat, he fights Grande, Grenades mother, and the dragon. Beowulf has a strong reputation for being a great fighter and defeating monsters, this helps him build on his reputation at Heart when he’s gaining hope from the people. Luke on the other hand doesn’t have a reputation other than his dad. Beowulf’s determination helps him kill because unlike Luke he knows and understands his strength. Luke at first doesn’t know how to use the “force” he has but eventually learns. This can also relate to how Beowulf wanted to come fight Grendel without any hesitation, on the other hand Luke didn’t want to go help save Leia at first. Both characters also have mystical weapons, and are naturally skilled. Luke has the Light saber, and Beowulf has a large powerful sword that he receives from Unferth. Luke’s strength is different because it’s mental and skillful, while Beowulf has power and determination. Another difference also is that Luke Skywalker has a spiritual guide Obi-Wan, and Beowulf doesn’t have one. Both Luke and Beowulf answer a call to adventure to fight against the evil. Luke fights because he wants revenge for the murder of his aunt and uncle, and to save princess Leila. Beowulf fought for the pride of his country and heritage, treasure, and honor. Their compassions cause them to set a goal and do something for the good of others.
