Presentations

Throughout monday and tuesday I saw a range of great and decent powerpoints. It was clear that some people knew more about their subjects than others. Jim had a pretty detailed and nice powerpoint in my opinion. I think he pieced his presentation together very well and had great knowledge about the subject matter. It was interesting to see how people presented their choice of their 1st or second paper. I thought Erins was also interesting because her presentation wasnt on the average DC Comic Hero, or action packed hero but a different type of hero.
Overall I had a great time listening to the presentations and seeing how people crafted their powerpoints.

Pr0ject

What are you doing for your presentation? How will you prepare?

I will b discussing my most recent paper on Batman and the role of his mentor Alfred. I didn’t want to pick my first paper because it is very poorly crafted and structured. I also feel like I can have more substantial information in this power point since I know allot more about it than what I wrote my first paper on, Hercules. I also love the Batman movies, which make me want to go deeper into the Hero's life. I am going to prepare first by finishing up my paper and fixing all my errors. I need to summarize the role of Alfred first to be able to start my PowerPoint. I also need to work on my thesis in this paper because as far as I can remember it wasn’t very good. I then will craft a nice PowerPoint with the requirements that I need to meet on Batman. I’m pretty creative so I don’t think that meeting those requirements will be a problem, I just think that some of the explanation requirements might be weak. I also think that picking my second paper was a better idea than my first. The first paper on the archytepal Hero steps was pretty bland and boring for me.

Blog – On p. 107, Blabbermouth gives Haroun a piece of feminist advice. She basically says that girls aren’t able to be strong (or heroic) characters because of the ways people stereotype them. Think about contemporary female heroes. Do we have any? Do we value the fact that they are female?

In the Hero story the male character seems more dominant and prevalent. There are some female heroes though, Electra being one. Electra is like a ninja type woman who fights crime. One of my favorite female heroes is Kill Bill. Uma Thurman does a great job in Tarantinos film. The men basically have the lead roles usually and the women tend to have a smaller position or will be an aid to the men.
There is also everyday women heroes like firewomen, and policewomen. At this rank women are treated the same, but I think in other job positions they aren’t. Some women cant receive a position in the company because their manager doesn’t think that they have the capability to do it.

Batman

Analyze Batman in terms of the three different types of heroes we have discussed (archetypal, tragic and anti-hero). Which type of hero is he? Is it possible that he is multiple types?
Batman is mostly tragic hero because he is self sacrificial for the innocent people of Gotham City. He protects them from the evil villains and helps reduce crime on the streets. Batman could also be classified as a mixture of all the hero types because he shares a little bit of each trait. Batman dedicates everything for the people and taking down villains with his cunning ways. He always wins his fights and even though there is suspense sometimes where it seems like he isnt going to make it, he eventually wins and defeats. Also Batman wants to bring down crime as does Harvey Dent, but Harvey does it without hurting any other innocent people while Batman on the contrary always causes more destruction to Gotham. One of is flaws is also Harvey Dent and the relationship he has with Rachel. Bruce Wayne loves Rachel and when she gets killed by one of the Jokers men he feels responsible and upset that the people of Gotham City want to bring him down and have him turn himself in.

• Blog – Comment on the underground man’s actions. How is acting here in relationship to the claims he made in Part 1?

In the first part the underground man had an active mind, and was always spiting himself. He sits in his St.Petersburg house with his smelly housekeeper and thinks to himself. The underground man explained that he doesn’t like the truth, and that freewill is very important. Without freewill then you only see one viewpoint of something. In the second part the underground man still has his active mind and still seems uncertain about choices. We also see that the underground man is changing and becoming more active with people around him. In the second part he goes to the bar with some people he knows. The underground man knows that he isn’t accepted by them but still wants to prove that he can be there with them. The people treat him as he isn’t wanted and make him feel lonely. Also I realize that the underground man changes his beliefs to go against what people believe, not what the system believes. The underground man doesn’t want people to shape who he is, which is why he is against what people think of him. Also we see that underground man has evolved a bit too because he finally goes out into society and is doing new things prove people that they are wrong about him.

Blog – Who is Rooster? What are your first impressions of him?

Rooster is one of the tough federal marshals. Maddie Ross wants to meet him because she wants to get help from him to find the killer of her father who is somewhere in the Indian Territory. He is well known for hunting down wanted criminals for the government to put them in jail and away from crime. Rooster seems to be a crazy man; he’s killed twenty-three people and captured many to bring them in. When we first see him in the movie Maddie is trying to get his attention after he unloads a wagon full o’ dem prisoners that’s he’s gathered from the Indian Territory. He has an eye patch and doesn’t look too intimidating. The first action we see him do is kick one of dem prisoners in the back as he is walking slow inside the jailhouse. We learn that Rooster Cogburn is a very dangerous man even though he doesn’t seem too intimidating. He gets the job done but apparently doesn’t do it clean. It is unclear how he takes care of some of his business but he seems to have been very successful at it because he has been sworn in to telling the truth in court since he’s done it so many times. I think that Rooster will help Maddie out but am not sure that he will actually find the killer since were reading about the ANTI hero, therefore he will not do something for the greater good.

Who is the ‘underground man’? What are your first impressions of him?

The underground man is sure as hell a weird character. He lives in St. Petersburg, Russia by himself. He doesn’t care much about things and doesn’t like people. He explains how he perceives things and how he even dislikes himself, he says, I am a sick man… I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man.”(3) The underground man sure like to complain a lot as well and say negative things towards himself. He also always seems to “spite” himself. As I was reading this the way its written is very strange but also has a nice flow putting you in the Russians perspective. The underground man also somewhat plays the devils advocate and goes against everything. He isn’t social and is basically like a hermit, he seems to be going through depression also, which could explain his negativity. Although the underground man is very weird and strange he is also very smart and once used to be in the government service. Even though he is smarter than all the people around him, he doesn’t realize that and just lets tears himself down. He just sits there in his corner and hates on the world and is the “negative Nancy” about everything. I think that this character will be interesting to read about because all of his different and special characteristics.
